IELTS (International English Language
Testing System) is a recognised evaluation of a candidate's
proficiency in all aspects of the English language. The
exam covers four modules of language skills which will be
commonly encountered by the candidate whilst working or
training in the UK. The modules are: Speaking, Listening,
Academic Reading and Academic Writing. Candidates receive
scores for each module on a band scale from 1 to 9. There
is no pass or fail mark.
Overseas candidates who reside outside the European Economic
Community must sit the exam to prove their English language
competency before being considered for registration with
professional bodies such as the NMC
(Nursing and Midwifery Council) thus enabling them to practice
in the UK. The minimum IELTS test scores accepted by the
NMC are: Speaking 5.5,
Listening 5.5, Academic Reading 5.5, and Academic Writing
5.5. Overall test score: 6.5.
The cost of the IELTS examination is currently £78.00 GB
sterling. International test fees vary subject to exchange
rates and administration but the fee is roughly the same.
For example, the IELTS test fee in Pakistan is currently
Rs. 6000 and in India it is Rs. 5250.
A candidate's IELTS test results are valid for up to two
years from the date which appears on the IELTS certificate.
