nursing & midwifery council
The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) is the regulatory body for nurses, midwives and health visitors in the UK. The NMC maintains a register of qualified nurses, midwives and health visitors, establishes professional and education standards, oversees conduct and practice and also investigates allegations of misconduct against its members.

why register?
All nurses, midwives and health visitors who trained outside the UK need to be registered with the NMC in order to practice in the UK.

who can register?
The NMC can only accept applications from holders of first level qualifications who are fully registered in their own country. The NMC will not accept applications from holders of the following or equivalent qualifications:

  • enrolled nurse
  • enrolled midwife
  • licensed practical nurse (LPN)
  • vocational nurse
  • community nurse
  • state certified nurse
  • staff nurse (South Africa)
  • mother craft nurse
  • nursery nurse
Overseas trained nurses outside the EEA wishing to register with the NMC must be able to demonstrate their command of the English language by sitting the IELTS examination. The NMC will only accept applications for those nurses who have sat the IELTS test and scored 5.5 in each academic category and have an overall band score of 6.5.

registration categories
The NMC register is divided into parts that indicate different specialities or professions. These currently include general nursing, mental health nursing, learning disabilities nursing, children's nursing and midwifery. It is important to realise that in order to apply for a given part of the NMC register you will need to have actually been trained in that discipline.

registration fees
There is an application fee of £117.00 GB sterling when you apply for NMC registration. When you initially apply for registration, you will be sent an information pack which will include an application request form and an information booklet which sets out the application requirements. Should you wish to continue with your application you should then return the application request form along with the payment to the NMC. It is at this point that the full application pack will be supplied to you.

If you are accepted for registration, you will be asked to sign a form agreeing to abide by the NMC's Code of professional conduct. You will also need to pay the registration fee. This is currently £93.00, which is a £33.00 initial fee and £60.00 for three years' registration.
