General information
for overseas dentists
If you are a dentist, dental
hygienist or dental therapist who has qualified overseas
and you wish to practice in the UK, you must be registered
with the General Dental Council (GDC). The GDC maintains
the Dentists Register and the Rolls of Dental Auxiliaries
(dental hygienists and dental therapists), by registering
all those who wish to legally practise dentistry in
the UK and fulfil the Council's entry requirements.
For dentists, there are two categories of registration,
full and temporary, although the latter is granted only
in certain circumstances:
- Full registration allows you to practice as a
dentist in the UK without any restriction. Full
registration in the Dentists Register is necessary
for dental work not covered by temporary registration.
Full registration can be achieved either by holding
a recognised degree or diploma or by passing the
statutory examination of the GDC.
- Temporary registration enables you to practice
dentistry in the United Kingdom for a limited period
and in specified posts without the need to take
further examinations. Every application for temporary
registration is considered individually on its merits.
There are also Specialist Lists. Any registered dentist
can work in a particular branch of dentistry (such as
orthodontics or oral surgery), but only those on the
Specialist List can call themselves 'specialists'. The
dentists on these lists will have to demonstrate to
the Council that they are qualified to use the title
'specialist'.
International Qualifying
Examination
The International Qualifying
Examination (IQE) is the statutory examination of the
GDC and tests the knowledge and skill of dentists whose
primary qualifications are not recognised for full registration
with the GDC. Entitlement for registration is gained
by successfully completing the examination, which is
held at UK dental schools throughout the year.
Overseas candidates outside the European Economic Area
(EEA) will be required to produce an original certificate
showing a minimum score of 7.0 in each individual section
of the academic International English Language Testing
System (IELTS) before they can enter for the IQE.
The IQE comprises of three parts:
- Part A comprises written and oral examinations
in the basic sciences and human diseases and an
oral examination in clinical dentistry;
- Part B consists of an operative test on a dental
manikin; and
- Part C contains written papers in all aspects
of dentistry, an examination in clinical dentistry,
an oral examination in general dentistry, a practical
clinical examination and an examination in medical
emergencies.
Parts must be taken consecutively.
All written examinations take the form of MSAs (Multiple
Short Answer) questions. Neither past nor model papers
will be available. The examination fees will be £550.00
GB sterling for Part A; £650.00 for Part B; £750.00
for Part C. The Council has no objection to candidates
taking preparation courses for the IQE.
IQE - Further information
and applications
