In order to practise as a pharmacist
in the UK, overseas applicants must register with the
Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain (RPSGB).
The RPSGB is the regulatory and professional body for
pharmacists in England, Scotland and Wales. The primary
objective of the Society is to lead, regulate and develop
the pharmacy profession.
Pharmacists who have qualified outside the UK can apply
to the Society for registration enabling them to legally
practise in the UK. Overseas applications to the Society
will follow one of three routes, depending in which
country they obtained their pharmaceutical qualification:
- European pharmacists - those applicants whose
qualification was obtained in a European Economic
Area (EEA) member state.
- Australia, New Zealand and Northern Ireland -
those applicants whose qualification was obtained
in Australia, New Zealand or Northern Ireland.
- Registration by the Adjudicating Committee - those
overseas applicants who have obtained a qualification
from a country other than Australia, New Zealand,
Northern Ireland or from within the EEA.
European pharmacists must be
able to provide the Society with documentary evidence
of their compliance with the standard requirements for
registration. These requirements are:
- To be a national of a member state of the EEA.
- To be in good standing with their professional
authority in their member state.
- To hold a degree in pharmacy from a member state
of the EEA which complies with the training directive
85/432/EEC.
In addition, applicants must also submit a copy of their
birth certificate and a health declaration by their
doctor confirming that they are fit to practice. Upon
receipt of these documents the Society will invite the
applicant to a reciprocity meeting to complete the registration
procedure and pay the registration fee
Pharmacists who qualified in
Australia or New Zealand must obtain a Certificate of
Identity from the relevant state authority where they
obtained their qualification and present it to the registrar
of the Society, confirming that the applicant:
- Is registered and in good standing in that state.
- Has obtained a degree or diploma in pharmacy.
- Has completed at least one year's employment in
pharmacy subsequent to registration as a pharmacist
normally within the jurisdiction of that state (applicable
only to pharmacists who were registered in their
state after 31 March 1968).
Upon arrival in the UK, applicants are instructed to
attend one of the Society's reciprocity meetings and
familiarise themselves with the laws and ethics of pharmacy
in the UK. The Society also recommends applicants to
arrange a four week period of pharmacy practice experience
in the UK prior to registration with the Society. A
copy of the applicant's birth certificate and a declaration
of health by their doctor will be requested by the Society
at the reciprocity meeting along with written confirmation
of their four week experience period.
Applicants from Northern Ireland must provide the registrar
of the Society with a letter from the Royal Pharmaceutical
Society of Northern Ireland confirming:
- Membership
- Good standing
- Current registration
The letter, along with a copy of the applicant's birth
certificate and health declaration, must be received
prior to the applicant arranging a meeting with the
Society at their head office in London before registration
can be accepted.
Those pharmacists seeking registration
via the Adjudicating Committee will be subject to an
assessment of whether their pharmacy training and qualifications
conform to European requirements. In cases of non-conformity,
the Adjudicating Committee will stipulate further training
required to be eligible for registration, namely:
- To successfully complete the OSP Assessment Programme.
- To complete twelve months pre-registration training.
- To pass the Society's registration examination.
Alternatively, following preliminary consideration of
the applicant's documentation, the Society may summon
the applicant for a formal interview before a committee
to decide the most suitable route to registration.
Application to the Society must be accompanied with
the following documentation:
- A certified copy of your degree in pharmacy.
- A copy of your current curriculum vitae.
- A valid International English Language Testing
System (IELTS) certificate with a minimum test score
of 7.0 in each academic area.
- A copy of your birth certificate.
- A certified copy of your passport.
- A completed, signed and dated Society questionnaire.
- Two recent passport sized photographs.
- The current application fee.
